Stimulation electrodes (TENS/EMS)

Comfortable, targeted stimulation for therapy and training

Effective stimulation depends on precision, comfort and repeatability. We design printed‑electrode patches that place current where it counts for rehab and pain relief, as well as athletic performance, producing electrical stimulation electrodes with layouts and adhesives matched to physical specifics and session length.

Applications

  • Pain & rehab (TENS/NMES): post‑procedure pain relief, chronic pain management, neuromuscular re‑education and at‑home rehab programmes.

  • Functional stimulation (FES/NMES): assistance and training for gait and posture, with repeatable pad placement and quick setup.

  • Sports & performance (EMS): strength sessions, warm‑up/priming and fatigue‑management blocks; designs tuned for high‑motion sites.

  • Research & trials: decentralised or multi‑site studies with kits that travel and full lot traceability.

Design challenges: key considerations

Stimulation electrode design is driven by even current distribution, skin comfort and consistent performance.
These priorities guide material selection, geometry and mechanical integration.

Current density
control

Pad area, spacing and electrode geometry are tuned to distribute current evenly and minimise the risk of hotspots.

Impedance management

Electrode type and adhesive system are selected to match the target current level, session duration and stimulation protocol.

Motion and mechanical stability

Interface design and mechanical reinforcement help maintain stable skin contact during movement.

Skin tolerance and wear conditions

Adhesive systems and carrier materials are chosen based on body zone and intended use.

What we build

For stimulation applications, patch architecture is driven by target anatomy, stimulation protocol and intended use. Quad’s stimulation platform supports a wide range of electrode layouts and interface concepts, allowing patches to be tailored to therapy, training and research systems.

  • Carrier and adhesive selection
Medical non-woven or polymer films on TPU or PET, combined with skin-friendly adhesive systems selected for body zone, motion and session duration.

  • Printed electrode layouts
Silver and carbon electrodes are commonly used for stimulation applications, with geometry and placement tuned for current distribution, comfort and session duration.

  • Interconnect strategy
Connector concepts matched to the electronics module and mechanical constraints, including snap (stud), FPC/flex tail, pogo-pin or crimp interfaces.

  • Handling and identification
Patch layout, orientation marks and lot codes designed to support repeatable placement, efficient setup and full traceability across use cases.

Why Quad Industries?

Prototype to volume

Share a sketch, a proposed stack or your device specifications. Together we select materials, define electrode geometry, choose the connectivity approach and validate packaging and shelf life.

Designs scale from prototype to volume with consistent quality and reliable lead times, supported by validated processes and automated manufacturing.

Skin lab and packaging

Stimulation patches are evaluated in our skin lab and through accelerated ageing to ensure reliable performance across storage, handling and use. Packaging concepts are validated to maintain electrode performance under practical conditions.

Standards & Quality

Quality and regulatory compliance are embedded at every stage of Quad’s operations — from early material validation to automated high-volume production.

Quad operates under a certified ISO 13485 quality management system, ensuring full alignment with medical device regulatory requirements throughout development and manufacturing.

Our manufacturing facilities are FDA registered for medical device production. Processes, documentation and traceability are structured to support OEM partners supplying regulated markets in the US and globally.

Why OEMs choose Quad Industries

Co-creation & advice

Co-creation is how we work. We challenge assumptions, ask the right questions and share insights gained from previous projects to help customers avoid pitfalls.

R&D

R&D at Quad is about exploring what’s possible before committing to what’s buildable. Through applied research, material testing and participation in innovation programs, we deepen our understanding of new technologies and emerging applications.

This knowledge feeds future projects and helps customers make informed choices early on.

Engineering

Engineering is where ideas are translated into concrete designs. Our engineers define architectures, layouts and technical details that balance functionality, performance and feasibility.

Every decision is made with downstream production and real-world use in mind.

Prototyping

Prototyping is about learning fast. We create functional samples and proof-of-concepts to test assumptions, compare options and validate critical parameters.

This hands-on phase reduces uncertainty before committing to final designs or production.

Manufacturing

Manufacturing is where reliability is proven. In our European production facilities, we produce both low-volume and series runs with full control over critical processes such as printing, assembly and precision cutting.

This allows us to deliver consistent quality while managing cost, yield and lead times.

  • ISO-certified
