What is a silicone rubber keypad?

A silicone keypad is a moulded elastomer mat with individual key tops, used across all types of equipment and machinery. Each key acts on a contact on the PCB or printed circuit below. Key geometry and wall thickness set travel and force, while coatings protect the surface and legends. Light pipes or under‑key LEDs can add backlighting and status indication.

    • Key shapes from low‑profile to tall caps; concave or domed tops for guidance, supporting safety in operation
    • Tuned travel and force curves via web geometry and material hardness (Shore A)
    • Embossed symbols, rim features and optional braille cues
  • Surface & legends:

    • protective coatings for abrasion and chemicals; antimicrobial and anti‑smudge options where required
    • legends by laser etching, screen printing or in‑mould markings; high contrast for readability
  • Backlighting & status:

    • discrete LEDs with light pipes for uniform backlighting of icons or rows
    • secret‑until‑lit effects and indicator windows
  • Integration:

    • frames, gaskets and adhesive selection for plastics or metals
    • interfaces to PCB, membrane switch or domed contacts as required

Integration and assembly

We align keypad frames, gaskets and adhesives to your enclosure material and tolerances. Contact choice (carbon pill, gold‑plated dome or PCB switch) and tail routing are matched to the electronics and service access. We provide bonding and fastener guidance to keep keys centred and travel consistent across builds.

Key considerations

We tune the feel to the task: travel, actuation force and rebound are set for confident operation in gloves or high‑vibration settings. Surfaces and legends are specified for cleaning agents and abrasion. Readability comes from clear iconography, contrast and selective backlighting. Where fluids or dust are present, we align gasket design and housing fit to reach the intended sealing level.

Durability, sealing and cleaning

Silicone surfaces accept hard-wearing coatings for abrasion and stain resistance and can be formulated for regular cleaning. With the correct frames and gaskets, assemblies can support defined IP targets when integrated into the housing.

Materials and options

Moulded silicone rubbers in suitable Shore A ranges form the key web and caps. Coatings can add hardness, matte or gloss finish and chemical resistance. Legends are applied by laser etch, screen print or in‑mould colour. We support add‑ons such as conductive pills, carbon or gold contacts, EMI shielding layers, and integrated light guides or windows.
