Human-machine interfaces (HMI)

Precision interfaces for reliable control and feedback

Some tasks need a confident click; others need a wipe-clean surface that works with moisture and gloves. We design HMIs that choose the right modality (membrane, silicone keypad or capacitive) and build them as functional skins on flat panels or formed surfaces with lighting where it matters.

What are human-machine interfaces?

A Human–Machine Interface (HMI) is the combination of hardware and software components that enables interaction between a human and a machine. The HMI translates machine data, signals, and processes into forms that are understandable to the user and converts human input into commands the machine can execute. The primary purpose of an HMI is to ensure safe, efficient, intuitive, and reliable operation and monitoring of machines and systems.

What we build

We build human–machine interfaces (HMI) and control panels across four families:

  • Capacitive touch panels
Flat or formed, clear graphics and selective backlighting; tuned for gloved or bare fingers.

  • Membrane switches
Robust, sealed keypads with printed circuits, domes (metal or polydome) and front foils.

  • Silicone rubber keypads
3D tactile keys with coatings/legends, optional backlighting.

  • Graphic overlays
Printed front foils and fascias with windows, textures and finishes; ready for bonding.

Solutions

Why Quad Industries?

Prototype to volume

Share a sketch, intended stack or housing constraints. We propose materials and mechanics, prototype the interface and lighting, validate readability and sealing, and ramp to series with predictable lead times, supported by our European base and touch-sensor lines in Slovakia and India for capacity and cost control.

Integration and assembly

Adhesive selection and gasket recommendations for bonding to plastics, metals or glass. Support for flat bonding and, where applicable, 3D formed parts and in‑mould electronics (IME) integration.

Increased relevance of HMI

Interfaces now carry more of the safety and usability load than ever. Cleaning, gloves, moisture and lighting all shape how a control surface must work in the real world.

  • Medical and lab equipment: easy‑to‑clean front foils, clear legends, gloved operation.
  • Industrial and automation: sealed interfaces for dust, fluids and chemicals; high cycle life.
  • Appliances and consumer: clean appearance, thin construction, reliable touch and backlighting.
  • Automotive and mobility: curved/3D smart surfaces, consistent feedback and integrated lighting.

Design choices we help you make

Material stack, embossing or domes, coatings and textures, backlighting approach (LED/EL/light guides), window clarity and hardness, sealing and adhesives, curvature or 3D forming, and integration into housings or IME parts.

Backlighting and feedback

Selective backlighting so legends and icons appear only when needed; uniformity managed with light guides and diffusion layers.

Status indication for integrated LEDs and light pipes.

Tactility placement of dome selection (metal/polydome), key travel and force windows for repeatable feel.

Durability, sealing and cleaning

Sealing that supports IP targets when combined with gaskets and housing design.

Chemicals & cleaning resistant inks and top films selected for disinfectants, solvents and UV.

Cycle life materials and mechanics tuned for required actuation counts.

Graphics and readability

Front foils and overlays for specific textures (matte/gloss/anti‑glare), hard‑coat and anti‑scratch.

Windows can be clear, tinted or filtered; abrasion and chemical resistance as required.

Identification that is clear because of durable legends and symbols with lot traceability when needed.

Standards & Quality

We operate under ISO 9001, ISO 13485 and ISO 14001 with full lot traceability. We align materials, process control and documentation to your device and market, without implying regulatory approval. Manufacturing is European based, with touch-sensor production in Slovakia and India to support cost-efficient volume and resilient lead times.

Co-creation & advice

Co-creation is how we work. We challenge assumptions, ask the right questions and share insights gained from previous projects to help customers avoid pitfalls.

R&D

R&D at Quad is about exploring what’s possible before committing to what’s buildable. Through applied research, material testing and participation in innovation programs, we deepen our understanding of new technologies and emerging applications.

This knowledge feeds future projects and helps customers make informed choices early on.

Engineering

Engineering is where ideas are translated into concrete designs. Our engineers define architectures, layouts and technical details that balance functionality, performance and feasibility.

Every decision is made with downstream production and real-world use in mind.

Prototyping

Prototyping is about learning fast. We create functional samples and proof-of-concepts to test assumptions, compare options and validate critical parameters.

This hands-on phase reduces uncertainty before committing to final designs or production.

Manufacturing

Manufacturing is where reliability is proven. In our European production facilities, we produce both low-volume and series runs with full control over critical processes such as printing, assembly and precision cutting.

This allows us to deliver consistent quality while managing cost, yield and lead times.

Quad Academy

The Quad Academy brings together cases, trends and insights from within Quad Industries. It’s a place to explore how technology, materials and production thinking come together in real projects.
