Graphic overlays

Readable, durable front foils for professional HMIs

Graphic overlays are the visible, touchable front foils on a control panel. They carry legends and icons, protect what sits beneath, and make the interface cleanable. We design and manufacture overlays that pair clear graphics with the right finish, windows and adhesives for your environment.

What is a graphic overlay?

A graphic overlay is a printed film, typically polyester (PET) or polycarbonate (PC), applied over a switch or sensor stack such as a membrane switch, silicone keypad frame or capacitive assembly. Inks are back‑printed for durability, windows are left clear or filtered, and adhesive is patterned to bond to the housing without covering active areas or domes.

Typical applications

Overlays are used wherever a cleanable, branded interface is required: medical devices, lab instruments, industrial equipment, appliances and vending, and mobility interiors. They serve as the face of membrane switches, surround silicone keypads, or front capacitive assemblies when glass is not used.

What we build

  • Films and finishes:

    • PET or PC films in appropriate thicknesses
    • finishes: matte, gloss and anti‑glare
    • hard‑coat and anti‑scratch options
  • Graphics & legends:

    • durable back‑printed graphics for long life
    • high‑contrast legends and icons for readability
    • secret‑until‑lit effects where required
  • Windows & optics:

    • clear, tinted or filtered windows for displays and indicators
    • optional anti‑reflective or anti‑smudge treatments
    • lens areas with defined hardness and clarity
  • Backlighting support:

    • selective illumination for icons and legends
    • light‑guide and diffuser compatibility for uniformity
    • masking layouts for clean on/off appearance
  • Adhesives & bonding:

    • pressure‑sensitive adhesives selected for plastic, metal or glass
    • full‑surface or zoned adhesive patterns to avoid windows and domes
    • gasket interfaces where IP targets are required

Integration and assembly

We provide adhesive selection and patterning, window masking, and alignment features for reliable placement. Overlays are die‑cut to shape and supplied in formats suited to your assembly process. Bonding guidance is provided for plastics, metals and glass.

Key considerations

We balance readability, durability and cleaning. Finishes and inks are selected for contrast and resistance to abrasion and cleaning agents. Windows are specified for optical clarity and scratch resistance, and adhesive systems are matched to the housing material and expected environment. Where sealing is needed, gasket design and material compatibility are reviewed with the enclosure.

Durability, sealing and cleaning

Front foils protect underlying circuits and surfaces from dust, fluids and routine cleaning. With the right film and coating, overlays withstand disinfectants and abrasion. Combined with gaskets and correct housing design, assemblies can support defined IP targets.

Why Quad Industries?

Prototype to volume

Share a sketch, desired finishes and window requirements. Together we select film and coating, define legends and backlighting masks, set adhesive patterns and sealing approach, and align optics and readability. We validate durability and cleaning compatibility, then ramp to series with predictable lead times.

Standards & Quality

We operate under ISO 9001, ISO 13485 and ISO 14001 with full lot traceability. For regulated uses we support documentation on materials, coatings, cleaning agents and identification. European-based, with touch-sensor production in Slovakia and India to support cost-efficient volume and resilient lead times.

Co-creation & advice

Co-creation is how we work. We challenge assumptions, ask the right questions and share insights gained from previous projects to help customers avoid pitfalls.

R&D

R&D at Quad is about exploring what’s possible before committing to what’s buildable. Through applied research, material testing and participation in innovation programs, we deepen our understanding of new technologies and emerging applications.

This knowledge feeds future projects and helps customers make informed choices early on.

Engineering

Engineering is where ideas are translated into concrete designs. Our engineers define architectures, layouts and technical details that balance functionality, performance and feasibility.

Every decision is made with downstream production and real-world use in mind.

Prototyping

Prototyping is about learning fast. We create functional samples and proof-of-concepts to test assumptions, compare options and validate critical parameters.

This hands-on phase reduces uncertainty before committing to final designs or production.

Manufacturing

Manufacturing is where reliability is proven. In our European production facilities, we produce both low-volume and series runs with full control over critical processes such as printing, assembly and precision cutting.

This allows us to deliver consistent quality while managing cost, yield and lead times.
