Membrane switches

A solid and easily adaptable technology

Since the 1970s, membrane switches have provided thin, sealed, cleanable control surfaces for professional equipment. Their closed front foils and durable graphics suit outdoor and industrial use, while precise tactile feedback and easy hygiene make them a natural choice for medical devices. Designs adapt readily with dome force, materials, coatings and lighting to fit the job. We build low‑profile keypads that stand up to cleaning agents, dust and fluids while keeping legends readable and actions certain.

What is a membrane switch?

A membrane switch is a thin, layered interface: a printed circuit on flexible film, spacer adhesives and a graphic overlay form closed contact keys. When pressed, the top layer closes the contact underneath; metal domes or polydomes add tactile feedback. The sealed construction supports hygiene, IP targets and long service life.

Typical applications

  • Medical devices: infusion/syringe pumps, bed controls, handhelds
  • Industrial equipment: ovens, scales, forklifts, automation panels
  • Appliances & vending: cookers, dishwashers, vending and ticketing
  • Navigation & comms: control heads and field devices

We offer a fully customised solution, from development to cost‑efficient manufacturing, including in‑house screen‑printing and converting.

What we build

Considering the variety of applications, Quad Industries offers fully customised assemblies:

  • Circuit & keys:

    • screen‑printed circuits on PET or polycarbonate
    • tactile keys with metal domes or polydomes; non‑tactile options where required
    • keys, sliders and key clusters; embossing options for guidance
  • Front foils & windows:

    • hard‑coated polyester or polycarbonate front foils
    • textures: matte, gloss or anti‑glare; selective embossing
    • clear, tinted or filtered windows with abrasion and chemical resistance
  • Lighting & status

    • integrated LED indicator lighting; backlighting with light guides or EL where applicable
    • secret‑until‑lit legends and icon illumination
  • Connectivity & integration:

    • tail types: FPC/flex tail, ZIF (zero-insertion-force), crimp, or pigtail wiring
    • gasket and adhesive selection for plastics, metals or glass; support for IP ratings with housing design

Integration and assembly

Adhesives and gaskets are specified to the housing material and environment. We align tail routing, connector choice and stack thickness to your enclosure and cable management.

Key considerations

Membrane keypads thrive where sealing, hygiene and certainty matter. We specify closed front surfaces and align designs to the target IP level so the interface cleans easily and resists dust and fluids. Tactile feedback is tuned by dome force, travel and diameter for confident actuation in noisy or eyes‑busy environments. Materials – inks, hard‑coat and foils – are selected for chemical resistance, abrasion and UV. Readability is treated as a requirement: icon size, contrast and selective backlighting are set for at‑a‑glance recognition.

Durability, sealing and cleaning

Closed front foils keep out moisture, dust and contaminants, and—with the right housing and gasket—designs can support IP targets up to IP67. We select coatings and top films to withstand cleaning agents and abrasion, and align life‑cycle testing to the expected actuation counts for the device.

Materials and options

We print circuits on PET or polycarbonate and match spacer adhesives to the environment. Front films are hard‑coated PET/PC with anti‑scratch or anti‑glare finishes as needed, and windows can be clear, tinted or filtered with added abrasion and chemical resistance. Tactility comes from stainless‑steel domes or formed polydomes, with venting strategies where required. Add‑ons such as EMI shielding, ESD layers, gaskets or integrated NFC/BLE/Wi‑Fi antennas are available when the application calls for them.

Why Quad Industries?

Prototype to volume

Share a sketch, keypad layout or housing constraints. Together we fix dome curves and force, choose materials and front‑film finish, define embossing and window spec, set backlighting and indicator approach, and select tail/connector, gaskets and adhesives. We validate readability, sealing and durability (cleaning agents, abrasion, actuation life) and ramp to series with predictable lead times, supported by our European base and touch-sensor lines in Slovakia and India for capacity and cost control.

Standards & Quality

We operate under ISO 9001, ISO 13485 and ISO 14001. For capacitive touch programs, we focus on readability, backlighting uniformity, and glove/moisture performance in the intended environment, and we can support technical documentation for regulated markets. Manufacturing is European-based, with touch-sensor production in Slovakia and India to support cost-efficient volume and resilient lead times.

Co-creation & advice

Co-creation is how we work. We challenge assumptions, ask the right questions and share insights gained from previous projects to help customers avoid pitfalls.

R&D

R&D at Quad is about exploring what’s possible before committing to what’s buildable. Through applied research, material testing and participation in innovation programs, we deepen our understanding of new technologies and emerging applications.

This knowledge feeds future projects and helps customers make informed choices early on.

Engineering

Engineering is where ideas are translated into concrete designs. Our engineers define architectures, layouts and technical details that balance functionality, performance and feasibility.

Every decision is made with downstream production and real-world use in mind.

Prototyping

Prototyping is about learning fast. We create functional samples and proof-of-concepts to test assumptions, compare options and validate critical parameters.

This hands-on phase reduces uncertainty before committing to final designs or production.

Manufacturing

Manufacturing is where reliability is proven. In our European production facilities, we produce both low-volume and series runs with full control over critical processes such as printing, assembly and precision cutting.

This allows us to deliver consistent quality while managing cost, yield and lead times.
